New Beginnings programs offer help for young mothers

Working against homelessness and poverty is not a new fight for Jill Engeswick.

The teacher at New Beginnings, a high school that focuses on marginalized students, originally helped pass legislation that allowed pregnant and parenting teens to ride the same buses as other students. Engeswick then turned her efforts to founding Beyond New Beginnings, a support and housing nonprofit organization for young mothers.

Beyond New Beginnings was created to help young women, between the ages of 18 and 26, with low-income housing, completion of a high school diploma, attending post-secondary schooling or full-time employment.
