Housing density bills threaten to upend local zoning control, area leaders say

While housing needs across the nation continue to rise, municipalities across Minnesota have expressed serious reservations about two bills being debated at the state Capitol, which could change housing across the metro and beyond.

House File 4009 (HF 4009) and Senate File 1370 (SF 1370), together colloquially known as the “missing middle housing” bills, are designed to increase the minimum housing density by allowing multi-family housing in single-family zoned areas as well as reducing minimum mandatory parking that usually goes along with multi-family housing.
